Our first bison calf of spring arrived this past weekend and we anticipate many more taking over our grasslands soon.
Expectant mother cows are separating themselves from the herd now, and forming smaller nursery groups with other soon-to-be mother cows. Together the small groups provide protection and nurture the newborns. The babies are also referred to as “Red Dogs” because they are born reddish in color.
Bluestem Bison cows give birth without human intervention, on the native prairie, in cycle with Mother Nature.
Warming weather, the growth of cool season grasses, and budding of the prairie help to support the nutritional demands of the mother to nurse her baby
