Bluestem Bison represent a premier herd, descendants of the last genetically pure bison from Yellowstone. They spend their lives grazing on native Bluestem grasses at our ranch in Northwest Kansas nourished by the sunlight, fresh air, and clean water.

Bluestem Bison live in their natural environment, deeply connected within their families. The herd roams freely across the prairie. They’re never cross bred as we strive to maintain their social structure with minimal human intervention. A select few are humanely harvested with dignity and respect on the very same grasslands where they were born and live their entire lives.

Take Its Course
Our Northwestern Kansas landscape is a tapestry of rolling hills and cliffs, blanketed with native Big Bluestem and Little Bluestem grasses. The Great Plains is home to more than 3,000 grass, forb, and plant species, most of which are consumed by bison.

You will find our bison ranch nestled between two life-giving waterways. The land comes alive with deer, songbirds, predatory mammals, insects, and reptiles, each playing key roles in a healthy, symbiotic ecosystem. Mule deer, white tail deer, and a variety of upland birds including pheasant, quail, turkey, and prairie chicken thrive here.
Our bison are more than just livestock — they’re key players in restoring the health of our soil and grasslands. As they roam the land, they naturally fertilize, cultivate, and allow the earth to repair itself, turning the clay loam soil into a fertile foundation for life.

With years of experience in the beef industry and firsthand observation of both the declining food system and the destruction of prairie ecosystems, Bluestem Bison Ranch was founded to offer a healthier alternative by reintroducing the majestic bison to their native lands. We are 100% privately owned and the only bison ranch in the country that handles bison meat products from start to finish.

We are deeply passionate about healthy living and environmental conservation, modeling our approach on nature itself. By allowing the bison to thrive with minimal human interference and maintaining full oversight of the entire meat production process, we deliver a superior source of protein.

Our team is powered by a dynamic group of conservationists, scientists, butchers, dieticians, artists, and health advocates - all united by a shared interest to revolutionize the food system.
OUR BISON MEAT
Directly from Pasture to Plate
We believe that knowing where your food comes from is a basic consumer right. That’s why we strive to be fully transparent about how our bison are raised and harvested.
Bluestem Bison graze freely and openly in the pastures for their entire lives. We avoid placing unnecessary stress on our animals, so they’re never confined or transported to outside processing facilities for harvesting.
Instead, field harvesting occurs in their native pasture as a celebration of life. This act of respect also minimizes the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which negatively affect the quality of the meat.
During the pandemic, meat producers and processors experienced many challenges. We took this opportunity to build a processing facility right on our ranch. Our talented crew has been trained specifically for labor-intensive field harvesting, bison meat cutting, and trimming. We process animals one by one, using old-world butchery practices.
